Ep. 8 The Rainbow Diet: Bridging the Gaps Between Science, Soul, & Art in Medicine with Dr. Deanna Minich

Deanna Headshot photo.jpg

I have a great respect for both [science & spirituality]... By bringing together the spiritual with the physical through the rainbow of who we are is what my mission is in life - to help people do that.~ Dr. Deanna Minich

What does true holistic health actually look like? How can we bridge the gap between wisdom from ancient traditions, modern science, intuition and spiritual approaches?

Today’s guest Dr. Deanna Minich has spent over 20 years answering these questions and has not only created an incredible body of work blending these areas, as you’ll see, she literally brings so much color and light to the often confusing and polarizing topic of nutritional science.

Dr. Deanna Minich is an internationally-recognized teacher, author, scientist, speaker, and artist. Her passion is bringing forth a colorful whole-self approach to nourishment and bridging the gaps between science, soul, and art in medicine.

She has decades of diverse, well-rounded experience in the fields of nutrition and functional medicine, including clinical practice, research, product formulation, writing, and education. Her doctoral (Ph.D.) research focused on essential fatty acid absorption and metabolism, and her Master of Science degree (M.S.) allowed her to explore the health benefits of the colorful, plant-based carotenoids. She has authored six books, on health and wellness and over fifteen scientific publications. Her most recent book is called The Rainbow Diet: A Holistic Approach to Radiant Health Through Foods and Supplements.

In this episode, she talks about her own healing story, how she came to blend science and spirit in her work, and we take a colorful journey through the 7 Systems of Health that are the backbone of Deanna’s teachings today. Enjoy!

Ep. 7 Intuitive Eating & Soul Hunger: Breaking Through Eating Challenges with Metaphor & Storytelling with Dr. Anita Johnston

“As long as we interpret our nonphysical hunger literally, we will attempt to use food to satisfy it, and you will remain hungry forever. But when we define our hungers & develop a deeper awareness of what we are hungry for, we can begin to seek the appropriate nourishment.” ~ Dr. Anita Johnston

Have you ever felt that your eating was “out of control?” How can we build a nourishing relationship to food and eat intuitively? How can we fulfill our hunger if we don’t even know where it’s coming from or what we’re hungry for..?

Food... make no mistake, is not simply what you put in your mouth.

Food is what you feed yourself on all levels - physically, emotionally, mentally, spiritually. Hunger can be rooted in all of these areas as well. Today, we dive deep into the realms of soul hunger with Anita Johnston, Ph.D., a Depth Psychologist and author of Eating in the Light of the Moon: How Women Can Transform Their Relationships with Food Through Myths Metaphors, and Storytelling.

Dr. Johnston has been working in the field of women’s issues, feminine spirituality, and disordered eating for over 35 years, and is currently the Clinical Director of ‘Ai Pono Hawaii, which has a residential program on Maui and outpatient eating disorder programs in Honolulu and The Big Island of Hawaii. She is best known for her use of metaphor and the ancient wisdom found in storytelling, along with her training as a clinical psychologist, to address the struggles of women and their bodies.

In this episode, Dr. Johnston shares how food challenges begin and steps you can take in addressing your own eating challenges, her own take on the real reason behind self-imposed food restriction and binging, how to crack the hunger and cravings code, and what she believes to be the SINGLE critical skill that is required to recover from eating difficulties/disorder (and Anita has seen thousands of people recover from eating challenges and disordered eating!). I know you’re going to enjoy this magical journey through storytelling and soul food.

Enjoy!

What are #UNFILTERED Moon Musings?

These #UNFILTERED episodes are a hybrid of moon musings + convo + QA answering your top questions about holistic health, nutrition, herbs, moon cycles, and earth-based medicine. Connecting to the moon cycles can be a powerful way to tap into your inner wild and wise self, and if you want to come along for the ride, we are LOVING the Many Moons book by Sarah Gottesdiener - you can grab yours here!

BUT we need YOUR help! Send us your questions and comments by clicking here, we can't wait to hang out with you <3

This Episode's Theme...

Full Moon in Sagittarius :: Blooming + Abundance

What does abundance look like in your life? What if you give yourself full permission to embody abundance... what would shift?

In this episode, Megan and Venessa share some practical tips and tools to really expand your time and energy, establish your own definition of and your relationship to abundance in this really potent time of the blooming flower full moon in Sagittarius! Enjoy!

Love this podcast? Subscribe over on Apple Podcasts or Stitcher and never miss an episode.

Show Notes

In this episode, we discuss:

  • What does abundance really mean? Our own personal takes...

  • What abundance looks like to Megan as a busy mama & entrepreneur

  • How our concept of abundance has totally changed and why

  • Getting into the flow and “river of abundance”

  • Flower moon and blooming practices starting with the breath

  • How breathwork and meditation can be a “vacation for introverts”

  • The fascinating newly discovered role that our lungs have in our health and their importance in creating abundance

  • One game-changing concept, practice, and way of understanding: rocks, pebbles, and sand philosophy

  • The power of working with the Wheel - creating your own wheel of life, seasons, and body

  • We walk you thru a practical way to actually create more time

  • How brutal honesty can lead to freedom and choice

  • The evolutionary programming that led to FOMO (fear of missing out)

  • Expanding time through quantum relativity - AKA magic

  • The concept of expansion in healing

  • The importance of our mitochondria in our flow, expansion, and abundance

Two practices to try for this Full Moon:

  • Rocks Pebbles Sand exercise - What is going to fill your container?

Remember... Rocks are your top priorities and commitments (the things that really matter in life) and you fill your container with those first; Pebbles are the things that nourish and grow you but are not as critical or necessary as your big Rocks; Sand is filler - all the things that make the icing on that gluten-free cake (think social media, emails, running little errands, etc) ;)

  • Create your own wheel - wheel of life, wheel of health, wheel of your body...

What are the areas on your wheel that you want to focus on? i.e. time in nature, family, being in tune with moon, exercise, spiritual wellness, ritual, sleep, food, career, purpose, etc

Venessa's Rocks Pebbles Sand Journal Example:

Rocks Pebbles Sand in planning for the week...

Start off by doing a brain dump of all the things you want to get done or already have committed to.

After you list those off, you can start identifying which ones are the Rocks, Pebbles, and Sand.

Start filling your week with the Rock items first. Then the Pebble items. Then fill in wherever you have space with Sand items.

This should give you a good idea if you are planning/doing too much and highlight the stuff that actually matters! xo

Welcome to Feed Your Wild :: Food for your Body, Mind, & Soul

Welcome to Feed Your Wild! In this first episode, I'm honored to introduce myself, tell you a bit about the show, my story of overcoming chronic illness and how my mom's journey with breast cancer led me to the healing work I do today using food as medicine, nature-based practices, and intuitive guidance. I'll set the stage for what you can expect in upcoming episodes of Feed Your Wild.

This past weekend was a meaningful one for me as it was Mother's Day, and I feel so grateful to finally birth this baby podcast and share it with the world in honor of my mom Norma who was the catalyst for what I do and how I walk this earth today. I know she's always with me and I hope that you find a glimmer of hope or value listening to our stories. Te amo mami!
