Sajah Popham, founder of Organic Unity and The School of Evolutionary Herbalism, is a student of the universal truths found within both ancient and modern herbal traditions from around the world. He is also the author of Evolutionary Herbalism: Science, Spirituality, and Medicine from the Heart of Nature (North Atlantic Books, 2019). The focus of his work is on integrating ancient teachings for a new paradigm of plant medicine, one that is truly holistic in its honoring of the spirit, energetics, and body of both people and plants. His unique synthesis bridges herbalism not only east and west, but north and south, above and below, into a universal philosophy that encompasses indigenous wisdom, Ayurveda, western Alchemy and Spagyrics, Astrology, clinical herbalism, and modern pharmacology.
Sajah’s vitalist approach utilizes plants not only for physiological healing and rejuvenation, but for the evolution of consciousness, for a truly holistic practice of plant medicine. His teachings embody a heartfelt respect, honor and reverence for the vast intelligence of plants in a way that empowers us to look deeper into the nature of our medicines and ourselves. He lives in southern Oregon with his wife where he teaches at his school, makes spagyric medicines, and practices his art.
In this episode, we discuss:
How Sajah knew he wanted to work in medicine as a kid and how the plant path pulled him from the track of becoming a surgeon
Sajah’s realization that healing is so much more than fixing what’s broken
How Sajah considers himself more of a spiritual seeker before an herbalist
How Sajah began studying various herbal and healing traditions, uncovering universal truths that led to his goal to honor both the physical and spiritual
How the current education system structures our way of thinking and the importance of “learning by heart” - gnosis cardiaca, and Sajah’s interest in the “perennial truth”
The importance of the natural world and the light of nature being the core pillar of evolutionary herbalism
The 5 pillars of evolutionary herbalism
3 primary energetic patterns at the basis of herbal medical traditions and cosmic science: the 3 principles, 5 elements, and 7 planets
Universal herbalism is understanding how these patterns are reflected in life and health, and traditions of herbalism throughout the world and ages
Transformational medicine which addresses the mind, heart, body, and soul
“The body is the most material aspect of the soul, and the soul is the most volatile aspect of the body - they’re not separate.”
Pillar #5: Know thyself -
The spiralic journey and the nonlinear energetic patterns of nature
Sajah’s perspective on dogma and how we’re usually all saying the same thing in different words
How we can work with plants for transformational healing and assist us in reclaiming our true natures and support us in working through traumas and breaking through conditionings
How Sajah uses medical astrology to translate patterns within a person’s life
The significance of archetypal forces and patterns within medicine, plants, and people as a bridge
How to tend to the inner cosmos and Sajah walks us through a fantastic case study to ground these principles into practice, including planetary patterns, plant medicine, and energetics for healing body, mind and spirit
How working with plant in an alchemical way helped to heal the expression of the pattern and archetype of the person
How working with a single plant that is a “match” energetically to the patterns of the person can be profoundly powerful in the healing process
The difference between a “hope herbalist” and a holistic herbalist, and how an evolutionary herbalist is looking at the spiritual and archetypal expression too
