Uncovering Suppressed Histories + Reclaiming Ancient Ways of Living For A Vital Future With Max Dashu

Those toxins don’t stay buried, especially if they’re embedded in scriptures. We have to grapple with these legacies in order to heal because those toxins keep coming back and we’re seeing that with what’s happening now in the United States. And so these are stories we need to know - we need to know our own story.~ Max Dashu

Have you ever wondered... how did we get here? Where are all of the women in history books? What about the true stories that have been left out of our school curriculum and kept hidden for centuries? How about cultures and societies beyond the patriarchal paradigm... What about cultures where women were not only equal, but people were living in a non-hierarchical paradigm that actually valued the maternal and revered Mother Earth?

How different would our world be today if we still lived by these principles and ancient ways of knowing?

That’s what Max Dashu asked herself as a young woman in 1960s who dared to defy her history professors at Harvard and embark on a journey to get out of the patriarchal interpretation of women and dig up suppressed histories. What she found not only changed her own life, but provides a template for reclaiming the wisdom and vitality we seemingly lost long ago.

Max Dashu is a historian and one of the world’s leading experts on matriculture. in this episode, she shares various historical global patterns that she discovered are missing in modern times, the nature-based practices and ways of knowing that Max has seen throughout history and what Max foresees in our collective future (with her unique perspective as a historian) plus the prescient advice she gives us for how to move forward.

I love how Max weaves together mind-blowing cultural findings, historical facts, linguistic patterns, and art in her teachings... if you’re a nerd like me, get your notebooks ready and listen twice. You’re in for a treat :)

Max Dashu founded the Suppressed Histories Archives in 1970 to research and document global women's history, reflecting the full spectrum of the world's peoples. She has built a collection of 40,000 images, from which she has created 130 slideshows on female cultural heritages, including Indigenous traditions, and patterns of domination. She is internationally known for her expertise on ancient female iconography, matricultures and patriarchal systems, medicine women and shamans, witch hunts, and female spheres of power.

Show Notes

In this episode, we discuss:

  • Why Max started Suppressed Histories and her quest for evidence of matricultures to get out of the patriarchal interpretation of women
  • How the “HIStory” we are taught in school, which is very Eurocentric, is different than what Max was finding globally
  • How integration of the economical, technological AND spiritual is found throughout history, yet divorced and missing in modern Western times... i.e.“living in a sacred manner”
  • Max found that women played a central figure in culture throughout history
  • How Max began to puzzle piece together women’s history through ancient figurines before written record - a window into ancient culture
  • The patterns that she discovered globally including Ceremonial pots in the form of breasts (theme of "life-giver") as ceremonial vessels, and pots in the shape of women
  • How words such as “witch” and "weird" have been changed and demonized overtime - yet the names in the ethnic languages often meant things like knower, seer, spirit journeyer, healer, medicine woman
  • The resonant themes that Max has found in culture throughout the world and ages
  • How the the waters, stones, and trees were central in various cultures - “as the witches teach” through earth-based spirituality
  • The nature-based practices and ways of knowing that Max has seen throughout history that we can revitalize and practice today to support our connection to the earth and healing ways of our ancestors: land walking, immersion in “living waters,” and breath/chant/invoking - naming it.
  • What Max foresees in our collective future (with her unique prospective as a historian) and the prescient advice she gives us for how to move forward.
  • The parallels she sees throughout history that are being played out today, and how the principal of compassion has to guide us today.
  • Max’s thoughts on the internet, social media and new technology
  • What Max believes needs to be a recovered for people of European descent and her thoughts around the issue of cultural appropriation
  • How art, connection, community are of vital importance in the health of cultures and the world, and how Max is providing this experience thru her new Theosophy Goddess coloring book
  • Max's upcoming books and projects, including never-before seen histories of ancient Hellenic/Greek peoples

Healing the Healer: A Journey Through The Amazon To The Heart With Irene Shamma

As soon as we say yes to a calling, life helps us, life shows us the way.” ~ Irene Shamma

Scientists predict the Amazon rainforest could be consumed in the next 50 years. This disheartening fact fuels Irene's work of planting trees, raising awareness and teaching us how we can all make a difference.

In this episode, Irene Shamma tells us about her adventure to the Amazon + healing her heart with Ayahuasca, walks us through the anatomy of Mother Earth and the vital role of the Amazon rainforest for her overall health and our own. Irene also paints a picture of the stark reality and seriousness of the devastation that is happening in the rainforest right now... how we ALL have an impact and what steps we can take to make a positive difference as a regenerative species rather than a destructive one.

Her story begins with a journey to recover something very dear to her as a child that she lost... her deep connection to the natural world and sense of compassion. What she didn’t realize was that she was being called by something much deeper than herself.

Irene Shamma is an architect, designer, and environmental activist from Cyprus who left her life in the city and embarked on a journey of self-discovery and reconnection with nature in the Amazon rainforest. Along this journey, she received deep shamanic healing with medicinal plants that allowed her to experience the magnificence of the rainforest but also its devastating destruction to the deepest level. A calling to devote herself to the protection of the Amazon emerged.

Enjoy!

  • Why the Amazon is called the lungs, heart, womb, and pharmacy of our planet and how we are ALL connected to this place even if we live on the other side of the planet as well as its destruction

María Benedetti on Revitalizing Botanical Traditions of Healing and Reciprocity with Nature

It’s important to bring Her, Mother Earth, in... It’s time to stand up for the natural world, and the culture at large is destroying the natural world, so it’s time for all of us to stand up and be counted as those who put our relationship with nature before other things. ~ María Benedetti

Today’s episode is one that is dear to my heart. We’re speaking with María Benedetti, an ethnobotanical researcher and author focusing on the plant medicine and invisible people of Puerto Rico. We talk about her journey of self-discovery through her work of documenting and preserving plant wisdom and folkloric medicine. She shares incredible stories of so-called “barefoot healers” and we discuss the history and impact of colonialism and capitalism on folkloric medicine and the communities that hold these wise traditions and knowledge. María also shares her refreshing and hopeful take on the challenges that Puerto Rico has faced and continues to face in light of the recent natural disaster and economic plight.

María Benedetti is an ethnobotanical researcher, author and educator focused on the botanical traditions of healing and reciprocity with nature in the Puerto Rican archipelago.  A student of anthropology, literature and the art of writing in both English and in Spanish, she has worked as an educational journalist (culture, ecology, environment, botanical medicine) for nearly 40 years.  She began herbal studies with Susun S. Weed in 1977, and came to Puerto Rico ten years later to learn about and document the tradition of green medicine in the native land of her mother’s family.

She has authored several books including Earth and Spirit and has continued to document the Puerto Rican botanical tradition in several other books, most recently a novel Dolores and Milagros.

María Benedetti is director of BotaniCultura, an ethnobotanical education project, which includes a publishing company and a beautiful classroom without walls where she offers workshops and conferences, plant/tree recognition walks and facilitates circles of plant wisdom.

I know you’ll love her contagious belly laughs and uplifting spirit and the power of the stories she shares. Enjoy!

How Working With The Moon Can Change Your Life With Sarah Faith Gottesdiener

Moontime is a very natural state to live in. It is one our ancestors have lived in. It is of nature. It can be a useful tool at any stage of our own spiritual growth or awareness we find ourselves in.– Sarah Faith Gottesdiener, Many Moons 2018 Vol 1

Natural rhythms and cycles. These, I believe, are the bedrock of health, connectedness, and vitality as embodied beings here on Earth. If we are nature, which we are, then the more we allow ourselves to sync back up with the rhythms and cycles of our natural environment and the cosmos, the more deeply we open up ways for us to explore who we really are and our greatest potential.

Working with the moon can be a powerful way to do this. This is evidenced by ancient lunar calendars, the power of the moon to influence the ocean's tides, increased soil fertility with the full moon, and of course the feminine cycle of bleeding which happens to sync up with the moon cycle.

So how do you begin working with the moon? What does that actually look like and what can it do for you?

That's what Sarah Faith Gottesdiener began teaching in her Many Moons workbook for the past 3 years, which have now become a cult classic. Sarah Faith is a creative, an artist, designer, writer, teacher, and Tarot reader, who hopes to provide inspiration and support through a variety of different avenues.

Her Many Moons workbook provides a variety of esoteric and practical tools, utilizing the phases of the Moon in real time to get you "anchored, in touch with your intuition, and on your path with more intention, and more results."

In this episode, we dive deep right away into how to cultivate trust and build your own intuitive practice working with the moon, the history of suppression and oppression of people and magic, & how working with the moon has helped Sarah in her own journey with chronic illness. Sarah is an amazing human and has so much wisdom to share!

We have been using her Many Moons workbook as a resource for our #UNFILTERED Moon Musings episodes and are excited to share her process of creating the book, how to begin working with the moon. Enjoy!

Show Notes

In this episode, we discuss:

  • What are the Many Moons workbooks and how Sarah got the message to start writing them, despite having no prior plans to become a "spiritual self-help" author
  • Why so many of us have internalized the idea that our intuition is not valuable
  • How Sarah began to develop greater self love, self esteem, boundaries and trust
  • The surprising hardships Sarah dealt with after following her intuition and producing her first book, i.e. pushback, lack of money, and drained time and energy
  • Why desire for rewards and "instant gratification" can hold us back
  • The multigenerational impact of imperialism and how trust has literally been beaten out of us
  • How Sarah's own experience with chronic illness has informed her work
  • Why "metaphorical paychecks" matter
  • The importance of creating space for others to be seen & heard versus making assumptions or "should-ing" on people
  • What does "working with the moon" really mean and how to start a magical practice
  • Sarah explains the holistic cycle of the moon and different phases, the history of the lunar calendar and why living by the moon can positively impact your life
  • Overview of the various lunar energetics and how they are reflected within our own individual experience
  • The biggest myths and misconceptions about living in "moon time," 2 things that trip people up, and simple + practical ways to get started

This Episode's Theme...

New Moon in Gemini :: Destruction + Creation, How to Love Your Liver, & Addressing Addictions

Gemini (1).jpg

In this episode, Megan and Venessa dive into this New Moon’s Gemini theme of “dualism” and Spring time by getting clinical with this season’s “poster organ” - the liver. They cover the energetics, the role and physiology of the liver, and share some practical tips and tools to support detoxification on ALL levels.

Megan also shares her own vulnerable journey with addiction and toxins, how she was able to build a bridge for herself to face her addictions and breakthrough self-hatred to step into sobriety and feel more freedom in her life.

This is a powerful episode and we hope you walk away with some new tools, perspective, and inspiration.

Show Notes

In this episode, we discuss:

  • Liver talk - the “poster organ” of spring, destruction and creation, transformation; we cover the importance of the liver in our body at this time of the year
  • Eastern perspective of the liver - Liver stagnation occurs when the liver becomes swollen and sluggish in its attempt to circulate qi energy smoothly, and becomes stagnate in the liver
  • Common signs and symptoms of stagnant liver and how to identify if you may benefit from liver support
  • The many roles of the liver in the body and the best herbs and foods used to support your liver, i.e. dandelion greens and roots, broccoli sprouts, sprouted mung beans, cruciferous vegetables
  • Why bitter is better, especially in this season
  • The energetics and emotional aspects of the liver and this time of year: anger, toxins, addictions
  • According to Eastern philosophy, emotions have a huge impact on our organs and greed, anger, and resentment greatly damage liver function, and unresolved emotional issues are stored as excess in the liver
  • What we think one of the biggest “blind spots” there is today that takes our energy away from addressing our internal blocks and energy flow/qi
  • Disconnected connection and what that means
  • How to embody the liver in your life and be the bridge between destruction and creation
  • What Megan is letting go of right now and the specific food she's bringing in for liver support
  • Detoxing and dogma - why it’s important to remember that one person’s superfood may be another's poison
  • Megan shares her vulnerable story of her own addictions, toxins, and living in “two worlds”
  • How Megan was able to build a bridge for herself to face her addictions and breakthrough self-hatred and step into sobriety and feel more free
  • How to deal with the shame and what Megan believes to be the #1 way to move through shame
  • Why building self love and finding your support crew are critical in the process of recovery

Two practices to try for this New Moon: Embodying The Liver

  • What is one thing you want to “filter out” of your life and release in any area? What is “toxic” in your life that you can take out, i.e. a food, substance, social media, person, etc...
  • What is one thing you can bring in to nourish your process of detoxification, healthy destruction, and creation? Food/herb, activity, mantra, support system, nature, etc...
